Reports have been published about efforts by the cracker group known as Anonymous to conduct DDOS attacks against Paypal, Amazon, and other actors that have taken actions against Wikileaks and the interests of a free press. The willingness of these companies to squelch free speech and a free press and the drop of a hat is disturbing, and it is something free societies will need to redress if we are to maintain our freedom.
I'd like to take this opportunity to ask them not to commit these attacks, or rather to not continue such attacks. While Paypal, Amazon, EveryDNS, and others have certainly earned our ire and disrespect, I submit that these attacks do not further the cause of freedom of the press or of speech. I ask this as an American combat veteran, that has taken a personal and public risk to stand for freedom of the press and the Constitution I swore to defend.
I realize that your morality is different than mine; that you think DDOS attacks against those that act against your interests are an acceptable action, perhaps even the honorable course to take. I am not trying to argue for or against that proposition. I simply ask that you consider the very real possibility that your actions also harm others of us that are standing for freedom of the press, such as myself.
Please refrain from these attacks. Thank you for considering my perspective.
